Call for Submissions: Our God is an Awkward God

Edited by Megan Rohrer

Our God is an Awkward God: In Celebration of a God as Wonderfully Strange as We Are is an interfaith collection of writings about the full diversity of the imago dei (image of God), or an appropriate way of supporting the diversity of creation as found in non-theistic faith traditions.  A mixture of narrative, poem, art and other reflections, this book will be like an adult, non-fiction version of Are You There God It's Me, Margaret.

Accepted authors will receive a free copy of the book.  Proceeds from the book will benefit Welcome: A Communal Response to Poverty and authors will have access to purchasing books at cost for their own use or sale.

Deadline for consideration for the first edition: Sept 1, 2018.

How to Contribute to Our God is an Awkward God:

  • Contributors are strongly encouraged to speak about their own uniqueness or strangeness, rather than writing about the diversity of communities that they are not a part of.
  • Contributors may email pastor@gracesf.com before they begin writing, if they have questions about the subject or appropriateness of submissions, or are interested in thematic suggestions or prompts from sacred texts.  Send a short synopsis of your idea and we'll give you feedback.
  • To Submit: Please send non-fiction contributions that are no more than 20 pages.  Submissions may be scholarly (Chicago formatting please), narrative, interview, poems or art.  For other types of writing please contact the editor about your idea.  Authors may submit more than one submission. Please also include a one paragraph biography in addition to your submission.  All items can be emailed to: pastor@gracesf.com.
  • First drafts are due September 1st, unless special permission is given by the editors.  If possible, we hope to publish this book before November of 2018.

Call for Submissions: More Bible Stories

Edited by Megan Rohrer and Daniel Tisdel
(this book is the second volume of our Bible Stories Series)

We're looking for fictional stories that flesh out little known characters or tell stories with an eye toward contemporary issues.  This is not meant to be a translation or another version of the bible like The Message, rather authors will create a fictional story inspired by the ideas, characters or well known stories and reimagine them in a contemporary setting.  This may include writing about a character we don't know much about, or telling the before or after story that doesn't appear in the gospels.

Your story can be smart, historically rooted, funny, provocative, progressive and/or political.  Stories should be rooted in justice, expand the diversity of people who can see themselves as faithful or simply be a good story.  While it's okay to reference fancy academic ideas, the audience for this book is progressive pew sitters, pastors and those curious about faith.

If you have a great idea, or are unsure if your submission fits what we are looking for, send it in anyway.  Our editors will work with you to help it meet our submission guidelines or to get it into another book or journal in our Bible Study that Doesn't Suck series.

Accepted authors will receive a free copy of the book.  Proceeds from the book will benefit Welcome: A Communal Response to Poverty and support projects that seek to end hunger.

Deadline for consideration for the second volume: May 15th.

How to Contribute to More Bible Stories: Reimagining Between the Lines:

  • Contributors are encouraged to email pastor@gracesf.com before you begin writing.  Send a short synopsis of your idea and we'll give you feedback or let you know if we already have submissions using similar characters or stories.
  • Email your fictional story (no longer than 20 pages), with a one paragraph biography to pastor@gracesf.com.
  • Because we plan to do more than one volume, authors may submit as many stories as they would like.

Call for Submissions: Holy Night

Holy Night is 365 days’ worth of thoughtful prayers and meditations for night-owls, bar hoppers, individuals who are homeless, hungry, experiencing poverty, are lonely, anxious, working the night-shift, experiencing mental health issues or simply having a hard time falling asleep.

Written by friends of the San Francisco Night Ministry, these prayers and meditations are deeply rooted in the nighttime needs of a diverse urban city.  Some are rooted in a particular tradition, others are for people who have faith but are not religious or are unsure what they believe.

All proceeds of the book will benefit The San Francisco Night Ministry.

Submission Guidelines:
Submissions should  be no longer that 600 words and no more than twenty prayers, meditations, poems or mantras.  We hope you will be inspired by the work of the San Francisco Night ministry, a particular night of the year, geared toward issues affecting individuals living in poverty, with mental health or addiction issues or by the beauty of a San Francisco night.

Please send your submissions to pastor@gracesf.com with a one paragraph bio by October 15th.
